Before we ever speak

Meet Nick, in his own words.

A short introduction to how supervision works and what a first conversation feels like, so you know exactly who you would be talking to.

The weight DSLs carry

You hold a great deal, often alone.

Safeguarding leads carry disclosures, decisions and other people’s distress, usually while running a full role alongside it. You are the person everyone turns to, and there is rarely anywhere for you to take it yourself.

Reflective supervision gives you that place. It is a regular, protected conversation where you can think out loud, be honest about the toll, and feel supported rather than judged. It is not a case review or a tick-box, it is time set aside for you.

As a former Headteacher, I have sat in that seat. I know what it is to hold safeguarding for a whole school, and I know how much lighter it feels to have somewhere safe to put it down for an hour.

★★★★★

“One of the most impactful pieces of professional development we have invested in as a school. It has strengthened our safeguarding practice, improved staff awareness, and staff left feeling empowered and more confident in their interactions with pupils.”

What supervision gives you

Support built around you, not a template.

Every session is paced to what you are carrying that week. Nothing is rushed, nothing is judged.

Headset

A confidential space to reflect

A private, non-judgemental hour to talk through the cases and pressures on your mind, and to think clearly with someone alongside you.

Heart

Support for your own wellbeing

A place to notice the toll this work takes, protect against burnout and vicarious trauma, and look after the person doing the safeguarding.

Shield with tick

Confidence in your decisions

Time to test your thinking, weigh difficult calls and move forward knowing your judgement is sound and well-supported.

  • Regular, protected one-to-one sessions, in person or online, arranged around your term.

  • Trauma-informed and solution-focused, so you leave feeling steadier, not heavier.

  • Fully confidential within safeguarding boundaries, so you can be genuinely honest.

  • Led by someone who has held safeguarding for a whole school as a Headteacher.

Carrying more than you’d say out loud? Let’s talk it through, in confidence.

Why Nick

Someone who has sat where you sit.

I’m Nick Whitehouse, an Executive Leadership & Transition Coach and CPD/CE accredited Trauma-Informed Training Facilitator. I have over fifteen years of senior leadership, including as a Headteacher, so I understand schools from the inside and the real weight of the safeguarding role. I have been a Designated Safeguarding Lead since 2012.

My approach is trauma-informed, evidence-based and deeply human, grounded in neuroscience, ethical practice and psychological safety. In supervision that means you are met with calm and credibility, never judgement.

My safeguarding practice is also informed by NSPCC training, which matters here. Supervision for a designated safeguarding lead is not general coaching, it needs someone who understands the frameworks you work within and the weight of the decisions you carry.

Safeguarding commitment. Supervision is confidential, and that confidentiality has one clear limit. If something raises a safeguarding concern, we look at it together and I will support you to take the right next step. That boundary is agreed openly at the start, never applied as a surprise.

The Whitehouse Principle

Change starts when you feel safe enough to pause. You spend your days holding space for others. Supervision is where someone holds it for you.

Why supervision, and why now

Supervision is no longer a nice to have.

A confidential one-to-one supervision conversation

The emphasis on supervision within safeguarding practice has grown steadily, and for good reason. Keeping Children Safe in Education sets out the expectation that Designated Safeguarding Leads are supported in a role that carries real emotional weight, and Working Together to Safeguard Children is clear that effective safeguarding depends on reflective, well-supported practitioners rather than process alone.

Most DSLs I speak to have somewhere to record a concern and nowhere to put its weight. Supervision is that somewhere. It is not a performance conversation and it is not a case audit. It is a confidential, reflective hour with someone who has carried the same responsibility.

  • NSPCC training in supervision skills

  • Reflective and confidential, never a performance review

“Nick coached me through a period of change and uncertainty in a new leadership role. Over the six month period we worked together, he listened to my challenges, made me feel comfortable and gave me the practical tools and confidence that have helped me develop and grow into the role. Would happily recommend him to professionals in a similar position. Thanks Nick!”
